I was recently discussing different jewelry parts (yes, like body parts) with a friend who was trying to figure out what to have me make as a gift for his girlfriend.
I believe every different form carries a specific emotional weight, even before you personalize it.
Brooches are a degree of separation away from intimacy because they are worn on clothing and not directly on the body. (Although if you choose to wear a brooch by putting the pin through your skin, you’re definitely going to a whole different level.)
Most people, though not all, tend to take earrings on and off according to whim or outfit. Men are less inclined to do this than women, but I think that’s only because most of them haven’t even begun to amass the kinds of earring collections that women have.
Oddly, people often buy anklet bracelets for themselves rather than for others (maybe because the ankle can be tricky to fit?), so those show up as a personal statement, or have a secret meaning for the wearer.
Tiaras… well, tiaras are in their own category. If you’ve never watched the tiara scene from Big Bang Theory, I suggest you go to youtube immediately before reading further. I can’t possibly have anything to add.
Rings have cultural and personal implications that can be contraindicated in certain situations. When giving someone a ring, think carefully about what it might mean to the recipient. No matter if there’s not the remotest possibility that it could be construed as an invitation to spend a lifetime together. Or even if that’s what you want it to mean.
To me, necklaces and bracelets strike a perfect balance between the casual and the committed. They are worn directly on the body, where the skin can soak up their magic, and they can be worn all the time… or not!
